People are imprisoned by their thoughts & from there-on their suffering 4 it’s our judgments &/or thoughts that causes our suffering, not the actual events. Those judgments or thought-creations, create body sensations (emotions) & they can lead 2 an endless cycle where the emotion controls us instead of us controlling our emotions.

Learning 2 observe the arising of thoughts &/or emotions or experiencing them as an observer is the key 2 liberate one’s Self from them.

Realize & experience that you are having them without getting attached 2 them is allowing emotions & thoughts 2 pass & is the way 2 detach one’s Self from both dysfunctional thoughts & emotions.
